Seat Leon to be released as PHEV in 2020

Seat made the announcement as part of their annual presentation for the 2017 results in Madrid, stating that the plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle would be released on the market in 2020.  It will be manufactured in the Spanish Martorell factory.

Seat has acquired the Spanish ride-share startup Respiro, which is currently operating in Madrid with about 200 vehicles, including electric and hybrid ones. The plan is to expand the ride-share company to further major cities in the coming years.

Leaked images reveal the design of a Volkswagen EV for the Chinese market. However, the budget vehicle will not be sold under the VW label and is not exactly a new car either. Instead it is clearly inspired by JAC’s existing iEV7S with some changes to the front and rear.

Aston Martin to limit RapidE: The British want to manufacture no more than 155 units of its all-electric RapidE from 2019. That is just one third of the amount announced initially. The reason is that Aston Martin quit its partnership (for this electric model) with Chinese company Le Eco due to the latter’s financial problems. Pre-orders with a down payment of 10 percent of the total 200,000 pounds shall be possible from August. The electric version of Aston Martin’s DBX is supposed to enter the market by 2019.

Tesla has removed restrictions of its Autosteer. The speed limit for handsfree driving (in theory) on highways climbs to 145 kph, up from 128 kph. iNext to be made in Germany: BMW decided to manufacture its first autonomous EV in the company’s very own backyard in Lower Bavaria, or Dingolfing to be exact. The idea is to keep production close to its HQ that concentrates tech and development competence in Munich. Just a few weeks ago, BMW announced the creation a new R&D centre for autonomous driving in the north of the city but will also work on the iNext drivetrain here. The iNext is scheduled to roll off the lines by 2021, while production of other i-models will remain in Leipzig, Saxony.

GM to make EVs profitable? General Motors wants to be the first carmaker to enter the EV profit zone by making electric cars more affordable. 3D printed EV in New Zealand: The Drop is the name of a three-wheeled electric car that shall come out of a 3D-printer in New Zealand. Full autonomy for all: Elon Musk revealed the “unexpected,” saying that all new Tesla will have the hardware for autonomous driving (level 5) and that a fully auotnomous trip from i.e. LA to New York will be possible by the end of next year. The upgrade includes a total of eight cameras, better ultrasonic sensors that let the car “see” as far as 500 metres, and a 40 times more powerful onboard computer. To use it, drivers will need to pay an extra 8,000 dollars, or 5,000 dollars for a four-camera option.

State-build EV: FDG Electric Vehicles has entered into a cooperation agreement with Chinese Guizhou province. In a joint venture, they are to construct a production facility designed to annually build up to 150,000 electric vehicles annually.
