Electric cabs from Africa: South African start-up Mellowcabs has developed a three-wheeled electric vehicle for transportation services in cities. Eight prototypes have been built so far. Mellowcaps will mainly target African countries, but apparently also some U.S. cities have already shown interest.
BYD showcases hybrid rally cars: The Chinese carmaker has brought eight hybrid vehicles based on the Qin to the final race of the APRC China Rally. BYD hopes through this platform to “enhance the brand´s glamour meanwhile make more and more people know and like BYD”.
Electric take-off: Faradair Aerospace has developed a hybrid plane called BEHA (bio-diesel electric aircraft) that seats six and takes off and lands electrically. A diesel engine is used to charge the batteries. Money for production is being raised via crowdfunding and a first prototype should be ready in 2016.
New SIC diodes: ST Microelectronics from Switzerland introduced new silicon carbide (SiC) diodes for on-board battery chargers (OBCs). According to the manufacturer, these provide 2.5 times greater over-current capability versus rated current and feature increased reverse-breakdown voltage of 650V.
