BYD launches the Great Tang electric SUV in China

BYD is launching its seven-seat eSUV, the Great Tang, in China. The 5.26-meter-long electric model is said to achieve a range of up to 950km according to Chinese standards and will cost the equivalent of €30,800 euros. The new Great Han, as the analogous flagship sedan, will follow with a slight delay.

BYD has celebrated the market launch of the Great Tang, a new seven-seater flagship SUV positioned in the D-segment. It now ranks as the premium model in the company’s ‘Dynasty’ series, measuring 5.26 metres in length, and is available in four variants. Prices range from 239,900 to 309,900 yuan, equivalent to between €35,500 and €39,800 euros.

The entry-level rear-wheel-drive version, according to BYD, achieves a range of 800km under the CLTC cycle, while the single-motor long-range version reaches the previously mentioned 950km. Above these, the manufacturer offers two all-wheel-drive versions with a range of 850km, differing primarily in their equipment levels.

BYD first unveiled the Great Tang in April at Auto China in Beijing. At the same time, the carmaker opened its reservation system and has since recorded 150,000 pre-orders, according to its own figures. With a slight delay, BYD will also launch the Great Han as an executive saloon featuring similar technology. This week, key details about the Great Han were revealed thanks to the mandatory homologation application submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The Great Tang measures 5.26 x 2.0 x 1.79 metres with a wheelbase of 3.13 metres. The model is offered as a seven-seater in a 2+2+3 configuration. The SUV uses a 1,000-volt high-voltage architecture and thus supports BYD’s new fast-charging technology (‘Flash-Charging’), which enables a charging process from 10 to 97% in just nine minutes. A prerequisite for this, alongside the 1,000-volt system, is BYD’s second-generation LFP-based Blade Battery. In the Great Tang, this battery has a capacity of 105.7 or 130.1 kWh. The motor output is 300 or 370 kW, while the all-wheel-drive version delivers up to 585 kW. The vehicle’s top speed is 250 km/h.

Additional features include BYD’s dual-chamber air suspension with a 100-millimetre adjustment range and predictive chassis control (‘Road Preview’). Furthermore, the electric SUV is equipped with rear-axle steering, offering a maximum steering angle of 7 degrees. This reduces the turning circle to 5.2 metres and enables the so-called ‘Crab Walk’ – a diagonal movement of the vehicle.

In terms of ADAS capabilities, the Great Tang is fitted with BYD’s driver assistance system ‘God’s Eye 5.0’. As standard, it includes a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, which supports assisted driving in urban traffic and on motorways.

Regarding its market positioning, colleagues at CN EV Post report that BYD is filling a gap in its product portfolio in the 300,000-yuan price segment with the introduction of the Great Tang, creating “a clearly tiered product matrix alongside the Denza and Yangwang lineups”. Both are luxury sub-brands of BYD.

For context: the Tang, like the electric saloon Han, is a historically significant model for BYD. With this duo, BYD early secured access to the domestic premium market for electric vehicles. Since their market launch, both models have undergone multiple revisions. Most recently, in 2025, BYD expanded the two series with the new flagship models Tang L and Han L, which are based on the company’s new 1,000-volt platform. With the Great models, BYD is now further broadening its range.

The interest in the Great Tang has been so high that BYD has postponed its market launch twice to “ensure sufficient production capacity,” as Car News China recently reported.
