All or nothing: Rolls Royce will not bridge to the electric era via hybrid propulsion but go straight to electric if battery technology allows, said CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. While he sees the future of motoring in electric drivetrains, esp. those from parent company BMW, he also assumes the firm’s clients would not accept “compromise” in the meantime. In terms of autonomy, RR is literally in the luxurious position, that most of its customers have a chauffeur anyway and thus care little for a self-driving Royce.
Future Mobility Days 2017 just happened at Volkswagen in Germany, where the company presented the Gen.E concept that some see as the next-gen electric Golf. There has been no confirmation and little information however, apart form a lightweight platform and a 400km range. The star of the show was supposed to be a mobile robot charging EVs autonomously.
Buy an EV online: Microsoft Sweden has teamed up with local EV dealer EVEN Electric to find digital paths to the minds and homes of potential electric car drivers. The idea is to set up a website that offers price comparisons but also services around EVs.
Hybrid family from AMG: Mercedes performance label has spawned a new line of hybrid ‘53’ powertrains, starting with the CLS 53. Coupling the novel 320kW 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine and a 50kW electric motor, the system is to deliver 370kW combined.
The Tesla way: The Formula E is anything but profitable and burned up a net loss of almost 34m euros at end-July 2016 when costs accelerated. However, the loss is almost half of that a year before and so it looks like the electric racing series could be on track to break even.
