BMW is selling its stake in Carbon JV

BMW is pulling out of its SGL Automotive Carbon Fibres JV as the carmaker sells its 49 percent stake to SGL Carbon. Rumour had foreseen this step back in August and now only the authorities need to agree.

The joint venture was set up together with SGL Carbon initially to guarantee supply for the BMW i3 and i8 as well as the 7-series. With exclusivity agreements having expired since, it makes sense for the carmaker to pull out and leave the business to the experts.

Still, BMW says it will continue to “rely on lightweight construction and an intelligent mix of materials, with carbon remaining a significant component,” explains Markus Duesmann, member of the Board of Management at BMW AG. This also means that SGL Carbon will remain BMW’s carbon fibre material supplier.
