Tesla sets up R&D firm in China

Tesla has registered a new energy research and development company in Beijing. It goes under the name of Tesla (Beijing) New Energy R&D Co. Ltd. and its representative is Xiaotong Zhu, Tesla China’s GM.

The news come as Gasgoo found the filing on China’s National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System website. The info given there defines the task of the company as research and development of electric vehicles (EV) and their components such as batteries. It goes further though and also names energy storage, solar and PV technology and information technology just in line with Tesla`s mission statement to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy” and not just transport.

It also makes sense in the light of the EV maker’s decision to build a factory in China and to produce its electric cars locally. The People’s Republic is becoming one of Tesla’s most important markets and estimates suggest that the Californians held a 9 percent marketshare in China’s new electric vehicle market in Q3/17.
