Sensor-Technik Wiedemann (STW) is currently presenting its powerMELA duo280 drive package for commercial vehicles with an output of 160 to 280 kW at Power2Drive in Munich. This is a drive solution that is suitable for retrofitting.

The system consists of two electric motors with 80 or 140 kW each, that drive the summation gearbox, which in turn transmits the power to the standard gearbox of the commercial vehicle. According to a press release issued by the Kaufbeuren-based company, the idea of “diesel out, electric in” can thus be realized with a minimum of mechanical conversion and while retaining the original total weight (incl. battery). The product – specially designed for the retrofit sector – is now field-tested and available for series production.

In Munich, STW is demonstrating the functionality of the drive package on a demonstration vehicle. This is a fully electric 44-t tractor unit called Elias, which was designed as part of a funding project by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. Together with vehicle manufacturer Toni Maurer and freight forwarder Ansorge Logistik, STW transformed the vehicle from a diesel truck into a heavy-duty electric vehicle with a range of 200 km.
