After the German company teamed up with the US National Park Foundation in 2017 to set up 100 EV charging stations at US nature reserves, they finally completed the project.

The project, which was coordinated in partnership with the National Park Foundation, National Park Service, and Department of Energy to donate 100 electric vehicle charging stations has been completed. At this point, more than 90 of the chargers have also been installed and are operational, meaning BMW stands to soon complete the initiative. BMW claims they will be completed this month.

“In making electric vehicle charging more widely available for everyone, this joint effort serves to make America’s national parks more accessible to drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. Will Shafroth, president of the National Park Foundation, added: “Thanks to public-private partnership, electric vehicle drivers can enjoy a quintessential national park road trip.”

The park locations were selected with proximity and strength of EV markets in mind, as well as distance from other public charging stations. The move was designed to provide easier access to national parks in a modern mobility age, as the parks logically also want to encourage clean vehicle use. “While our treasured landscapes offer familiar vistas time after time, the automobile has changed greatly, and parks want to meet the needs of our visitors who electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles,” said National Park Service Deputy Director P. Daniel Smith.

Why would they do this when, according to their own head of development, no one wants EVs?
