The Florida county of Miami-Dade has agreed to purchase 33 Proterra electric buses and up to 75 plug-in Proterra chargers, making this the largest electric bus order on East Coast USA.

Proterra recently announced that it now has more than 100 customers across 41 states in the US and Canadian provinces. Proterra leads heavy-duty electric vehicle production in North America, and began offering their technology to other manufacturers in August this year. Belgian bus giant Van Hool, for example, is using Proterra technology in its electric coaches for the North American market.

“Florida is one of the most vulnerable areas in the country to climate change, and Miami is working tirelessly to lower its greenhouse gas emissions,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez. “Deploying battery-electric buses is one of the best actions we can take to improve our environment and our community’s public health. We are looking forward to working with Proterra to deliver clean, quiet transportation to Miami-Dade.”

Besides the obvious benefits of reducing pollution, Proterra claims that its Catalyst vehicle offers nearly twice the horsepower of a standard diesel bus and five times the energy efficiency.
