Zero Labs presents platform to convert old timers

The Californian company Zero Labs has developed a standardised platform with which a large number of classic car models can be converted to electric drive. The platform is expected to be available from fall 2021, when the manufacturer also plans to publish a list of all classic cars that can be converted based on the substructure.

The Los Angeles-based company Zero Labs has set itself the goal of offering a uniform conversion solution for classic cars of different designs. The modular e-platform was designed for this purpose over five years of development work. The platform contains all central components and systems and is placed under the original body.

The new platform supports both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions with one or two electric motors with an output of 220 or 440 kW and up to 660 Nm and offers two battery options with 85 or 100 kWh capacity. This should enable ranges of more than 235 miles, or around 375 kilometers. Zero Labs does not yet quote prices, but announces that these will be “based on the customisation and selection of options”. Non-binding reservations can already be made.

Even though Zero Labs has not yet revealed which classic car models can be converted based on the platform, the company is providing a general framework: There will be basic versions of the platform for all-wheel drive SUVs built between 1947 and 1975, for muscle cars until 1975, for sports cars from 1948 to 1975 and pickups from 1947 to 1975. Zero Labs says that it will be responsible for both the disassembly of the original chassis and the fitting of the new EV platform.

In addition to the key e-platform performance data listed above, Zero Labs provides additional details. For example, the 400-volt battery system will be placed between the axles in the underbody, including safety and temperature management. The converted classics can be charged at AC or DC chargers. The vehicles are equipped with a level 2 connection for charging with alternating current. Other features of the platform include a single-speed transmission, 18-inch steel wheels with independent suspension, various suspension options and a Brembo brake system.

Zero Labs offers a 24-month warranty on the converted vehicle. The Californian company is increasing the warranty on the battery and drive train components to four years or 80,000 kilometers.
