GMC debuts 2024 Hummer EV SUV with 300+ mile range

After General Motors had revived the former fuel monster, Hummer, as an electric pickup, an SUV variant now follows. The GMC Hummer EV SUV is scheduled to go into production in early 2023 and will be available at base prices between $79,995 and $110,595 depending on the variant.

GMC will offer the Hummer EV SUV with two or three e-motors and outputs of up to 466 or 619 kW. This spec differs from the pickup model shown in 2020 when there was talk of 460 kW with two E-motors and 588 kW with three E-motors. The top trim pickup with 735 kW does not seem to be available in the SUV for the time being.

The SUV is also smaller than the pickup as its 20 inches (508 mm) shorter and has 8.9 inches (226 mm) less between the wheels. GMC suggested this makes the SUV more manoeuvrable than the truck and added its 35.4 foot (10.8 meters) turning circle is tighter than the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Staying with space, buyers will find up to 81.8 cubic feet (2316 litres) of luggage space with the rear seats folded down. The model also has additional storage space beneath the load floor as well as in the frunk.

As with GM’s other electric models, most Hummer EV SUV versions will have a 20-module Ultium battery that provides more than 300 miles (483 km) of range. The base version for $79,995 will have a 400-volt battery system, while GMC specifies an 800-volt system that allows charging powers of up to 300 kW for the other versions. The estimated range of the different versions of the GMC Hummer EV SUV will range from “over 250” to “over 300” miles (about 400 to 480 kilometres), according to the manufacturer.

Besides, the Hummer has a real off-roading theme going. The SUV will also be offered with what GMC calls CrabWalk and Extract Mode. The former allows the Hummer to drive diagonally, while the latter raises the vehicle about 15 cm to cope with extreme terrain.

The myGMC app will feature further functions along the theme, such as off-road trail mapping. Besides navigating in the “wild”, the trail maps also estimate range and show nearby charging stations on the 13.4-inch infotainment system.

The Hummer EV SUV will also double as Power Station. The function effectively turns the Hummer into a battery, which can supply up to 3 kW of power to equipment on camping trips. The Power Station can also be used to charge other electric vehicles.

GMC also utilises one-pedal driving for off-road applications as drivers can use the accelerator to travel slowly through rough terrain. The model also has a Terrain Mode, which GM says “uniquely integrates the brake system with one-pedal driving, giving the driver precise control while off-roading and rock crawling.”

GMC is currently accepting reservations for the 2024 Hummer EV SUV. Only all of the launch Edition 1s have been reserved at a base price of $105,595. The same had happened when GMC released the original electric Hummer that is said to have sold out within minutes last December.

2X and 3X variants of the electric Hummer SUV will arrive in the spring of 2023 and cost $89,995 and $99,995. GMC plans an entry-level 2 variant in the spring of 2024, which will carry said “lowest” price of $79,995.
