VW to drop manual gears in the shift to e-mobility

VW wants to offer only automatic transmissions in the future as part of the shift to electromobility, thus saving costs for the further development of traditional transmission technology. The first VW model completely without a clutch pedal will be the 3rd generation Tiguan from 2023.

Considering that few electric vehicles have more than one gear ratio to begin with, and manual transmissions are extraordinarily rare, it makes sense to phase out the popular mechanism. Additionally, once autonomous technologies become more ubiquitous, a manual transmission could actually hinder development.
