ABB’s Panion & AWS launch fleet management tool

ABB’s corporate startup Panion and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are launching the test phase of their jointly developed digital solution for electric vehicle fleet charge planning. The cloud-based software, called Panion EV Charge Planning, is dedicated to real-time management of electric fleets and charging facilities.

Panion says the tool is designed to help operators monitor energy consumption and create charging plans for their fleets. The new beta version of the solution includes features that are expected to make the tool an all-in-one solution for fleet operators when it is launched in the full version in 2022. ABB is contributing its expertise in energy management, charging technology and electric mobility solutions, while Amazon Web Services is providing its cloud technologies and software expertise.

ABB founded the electric mobility subsidiary Panion in Berlin last year. The company is to deal exclusively with the development of  what it says are customised, scalable and cost-efficient technologies for fleet operators. The solutions should be suitable for vehicles from all manufacturers.

Among the key functions of the management solution announced above is a charging scheduling algorithm that is intended to help reduce operating and energy costs while ensuring that operational continuity is not compromised. Panion says that another innovative element is that the platform’s charging station management function allows connection and communication with charging stations to plan, execute and adjust charging operations. The whole thing is rounded off by a fleet management function that provides the system with all relevant telemetry data in real time, along with a module for task and error management.

“The transition to electric vehicle fleets still presents operators with a number of new challenges,” says Markus Kröger, founder and CEO at Panion. “Our mission is to support this transformation with innovative solutions. By working with AWS and leveraging the expertise of our market-leading parent, ABB, we today unveil ‘Panion EV Charge Planning.’ This modular software solution helps fleet managers to make their e-fleet as reliable, cost-efficient, and time saving as possible.”

ABB and AWS announced their collaboration in the electric fleet space in March 2021. According to Frank Mühlon, head of ABB’s eMobility division, the partners have made significant progress in the short time since their collaboration began. “We are delighted to enter the test phase with our first product. Thanks to AWS’ expertise in software development and its leadership in cloud technology, we can offer a hardware-independent, intelligent solution that makes it much easier for operators to have confidence and manage their e-fleets. It will provide fleet teams with a steady stream of innovative and secure services, which will continue to evolve as we work in partnership with our customers.”
