When the QA problems come home to roost

Tesla will recall a total of 21,599 made-in-China Model Ys that were manufactured between Feb. 4, 2021 and Oct. 30, 2021, in order to fix a potentially dangerous suspension defect.

In a written response, Tesla explained that the front and rear suspension links on Model Y vehicles are attached to the ‘knuckles’. Due to a supply-side issue, “the knuckles may not have been manufactured to the correct strength requirement”. This could cause them to deform and fracture when a car is running, which could even lead the suspension links to separate from the knuckles. Such an issue would seriously affect the vehicle controllability and thus increase the risk of collision, as Tesla clarified.
