NHTSA pushes fines up for carmakers violating fuel economy rules

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration significantly increases the penalties for car manufacturers with fleets that do not stay within emission regulations. For the model years 2019 to 2021, NHTSA nearly tripled the penalty and announced further increases for 2022.

Manufacturers whose cars violate national fuel efficiency rules could face hundreds of millions of dollars in increased penalties, while Tesla and other electric car makers benefit.
