Tesla abandons ultrasonic sensors for the Autopilot system

Tesla announced today that it is moving away from using ultrasonic sensors in its suite of Autopilot sensors in favour of its camera-only ‘Tesla Vision’ system.

The original plan for the Autopilot system had included eight cameras, a front-facing radar, and several ultrasonic sensors all around its vehicles to create a real-time evaluation of what was going on around the vehicle. Now, the company means to only use camera-based computer vision in the Autopilot system instead of inputs from both cameras and radars, as mentioned above.

Tesla’s idea here is that since the roads are designed for humans who navigate them using their eyes, it would be best to try to replicate that purely with cameras and artificial neural nets and not let the radar data “pollute the system”.
