Tesla looks to Mexico for their next gigafactory

Tesla wants to build its next North American factory in Mexico. According to a local media report, Tesla has already bought a plot of land in Santa Catarina in the Mexican state of Nuevo León against this background.

If the report by the Mexican newspaper Milenio is true, Tesla will make the planned investment in Santa Catarina official in early 2023. The paper cites “information to which Milenio has access despite a confidentiality agreement” as its source. According to the source, Tesla and the government of the state of Nuevo León are currently finalising details. The plant is to be built in the west of the municipality of Santa Catarina. However, the newspaper itself writes that a search in the public property register of the Institute of Cadastre of Nuevo León (“IRyCNL”) does not yet contain any indication of a corresponding purchase by Tesla.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had met the governor of Nuevo León, García Sepúlveda, and other high-ranking regional politicians on 22 October. On 8 December, Sepúlveda is said to have announced that “historic” investments were imminent.

The announcement of the location for another Tesla factory in North America was originally announced by Elon Musk for 2022 – most recently the Canadian province of Ontario was being discussed. In the case of Canada, the references are also based on documents that reflect negotiations between Tesla and the regional government.
