GM starts production of the GMC Hummer EV SUV

General Motors began the production of the GMC Hummer EV SUV this week at its Factory Zero electric car factory in Detroit-Hamtramck. Deliveries are scheduled to start at the end of this quarter.

The electric SUV is an offshoot of the electric pickup truck of the same name. GM or the GMC brand already unveiled the Hummer SUV in 2021. Although still by no means a modestly proportioned vehicle, at 4.99 metres, the new SUV is 50.8 centimetres shorter, and at 3.22 metres has 22 centimetres less wheelbase than its original design. Although both Hummer old and new variants are very similar at the front, the new SUV also has a significantly shorter overhang.

When the SUV was announced in April 2021, it was already said that this version would go into production at the beginning of 2023, which GM has now achieved with the start of production on 30 January 2023, despite recent global supply chain issues.

The first example of the GMC Hummer EV SUV, which rolled off the production line in Detroit on Monday, was auctioned off directly, raising $500,000. The money is to go to the non-profit organisation called Tread Lightly!, which is dedicated to promoting outdoor recreation through accountability and education programmes.

GM is currently working off existing orders for the GMC Hummer EV and its SUV version and is not currently accepting new orders. The manufacturer has explained that both series were sold out for at least two years with a total of 90,000 pre-orders.

Last year, General Motors suspended production at Factory Zero to prepare the plant for the production of other models, such as the electric Chevrolet Silverado. In October 2022, GMC unveiled its second all-electric Sierra EV pickup model, which is scheduled for delivery from early 2024 onwards.
