Ovo Energy lets customers charge when rates are cheapest
British energy provider Ovo Energy is launching a new smart-charing product, allowing customers to fill up their electric cars when energy is at the cheapest rates. The intelligent grid technology is provided by Kaluza and should allow customers to save up to £350 a year.
Eligible customers must connect their electric car or EV charger with an Ovo Energy account. Over the mobile app, they select the time the car needs to be charged. The Kaluza technology then calculates when rates are the lowest and starts the charging process automatically.
The product is called “Charge Anytime, “which might be a little misleading. After all, the goal is to charge an EV at the most suitable times – and even not “anytime. “However, charging is not limited to a particular timeslot either. So in this regard, “anytime “does apply. The technology calculates when the battery should be charged based on energy rates and the time the car can be plugged in.
According to Ovo, its charge-at-home rates are three times cheaper than a public charger’s. Ovo customers could benefit from rates as low as 10p per kWh. Savings accumulated with “Charge Anytime “will be deducted from the customer’s energy bill. The energy provider hopes to motivate more people to switch to electric mobility. In-house research allegedly showed that 68 per cent of UK drivers are hesitant because of high energy costs.
