Xpeng publishes first key points on new electric SUV

Chinese electric car manufacturer Xpeng is preparing to launch its already anticipated coupe-like electric SUV – but not under the name G7, as initially planned. Instead, the new EV will be called G6. Regarding looks and dimensions, the model resembles the Tesla Model Y.

At the end of January, a published letter from the company’s CEO He Xiaopeng to employees revealed that Xpeng wants to launch two new and three revised models in China this year. The newcomer duo is the above-mentioned coupe-like SUV and a still unnamed electric van. At the time, the SUV was still referred to as G7. The letter also stated that the model would be presented at Auto Shanghai in April and would cost between 200,000 and 250,000 yuan (about $29,000 and $36,345). The G6 will be a five-seater, fastback SUV with 800-volt technology, related to the new flagship SUV G9.

Now, there are more details: the G6 will likely be available in three variants – two single-motor versions with 218 kW output (one with LFP and one with NMC batteries) and an all-wheel-drive version with an additional 140 kW motor and NMC batteries. The cells are made by CALB. The information comes from an application for approval submitted to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The application also includes the first images.

The dimensions of the G6 are 4,753 x 1,920 x 1,650 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. That matches the dimensions of the Tesla Model Y almost to a tee. The latter is only 2.5 centimetres lower.

There has yet to be any information on the exact market launch. But registration with the MIIT usually takes place a few months before the planned sales launch. The ministry’s publication usually offers first pictures and technical data even before the official premiere of a new model – just like in the case of the Xpeng G6.
