Rivian delivered about 8,000 vehicles in Q1 of 2023
The US electric car manufacturer Rivian produced 9,395 vehicles and delivered 7,946 in the first quarter of this year. For the full year 2023, Rivian is sticking to its goal of producing 50,000 vehicles.
Compared to the previous quarter, both the production and delivery figures represent virtually flat to slightly declining levels: in Q4 2022, Rivian still managed to build 10,020 vehicles and deliver 8,054. A year-on-year comparison with Q1 2022 shows the increase: at that time, 2,553 Rivian vehicles were built and 1,227 were delivered.
To reach the target of 50,000 vehicles built in the current year, which was announced when the company presented its financial figures for 2022, Rivian still has to increase production somewhat: 12,500 vehicles per year would have been necessary. However, since such a young carmaker can be expected to increase its production rate over the course of the year, the annual target of 9,395 vehicles built in Q1 still seems within reach. Rivian, therefore, states that the production results for the first quarter are in line with expectations.
In the release, the company also states that it is making progress in integrating its in-house ‘Enduro’ drive unit into the vehicles. The production line for the drive units has been “started and ramped up in line with expectations”. Rivian does not give figures, however. The ‘Enduro’ is a drive unit designed from the ground up specifically for Rivian’s vehicles, and is said to be both more efficient and significantly cheaper.
Rivian’s COO Frank Klein said: “This is a great start to the year, and we remain on track to hit our annual production guidance previously provided,” said the former Magna Steyr boss, who joined Rivian about a year ago. “I’d like to thank the team for all their hard work as we continue to ramp. We’re looking forward to taking this momentum forward as we hit the ground running in Q2.”
A month ago, it was revealed that Rivian would have to recall over 12,700 units of the R1S and R1T (all production until 15 September 2022) because the passenger airbag may not deploy correctly. In addition to the further increase in production, the company also has to reduce costs, as there was a loss of billions in 2022. As a result, further job cuts were reported earlier in February.
