SAIC-GM-Wuling presents new compact EV in China

The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture – best known for the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV – has now presented another new model in China. At just under four metres, the Wuling Binguo is significantly larger than the popular electric Flea, which is only 2.92 metres long.

The Binguo is available in China in two drive variants with a maximum output of 30 or 50 kW. The lithium iron phosphate battery on board has a capacity of either 17.9 or 31.9 kWh, which according to the company results in a range of 203 or 333 kilometres respectively according to the Chinese test cycle. By combining the different versions, the Binguo will be launched in five versions with starting prices ranging from 59,800 to 83,800 yuan, which corresponds to a price range of 7,970 to 11,170 euros.

According to further information from the joint venture, the small electric car is 3,950 mm long, 1,708 mm wide and 1,580 mm high – with a wheelbase of 2,560 mm. By comparison, Wuling’s current best-seller Hongguang Mini EV has dimensions of 2,920 x 1,493 x 1,621 mm and a wheelbase of 1,940 mm. The starting price of the Mini EV is 32,800 yuan, or about 4,370 euros.

As for the charging capabilities of the Binguo, the three variants with a larger battery and 333 kilometres range support fast charging (30 to 80 per cent SoC in 35 minutes). The Chinese state that the charging time for AC charging is 5.5 hours from 20 to 100 per cent SoC.

The portal CN EV Post reports that although the model was only introduced a few days ago, it has been available for pre-order since 2 March. The report notes that “more than 2,700 units have already been delivered.”

SAIC-GM-Wuling is a joint venture between SAIC Group, General Motors and Liuzhou Wuling Motors, based in Liuzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in southwest China. It sells vehicles based on the GSEV (Global Small Electric Vehicle) architecture in China, including the Mini EV, KiWi EV, Nano EV and Air EV. In parallel, SAIC-GM-Wuling also sells SUVs, MPVs and vans with combustion engines.
