Avatr gears up to launch a new SUV in China

The Chinese electric car subsidiary brand Avatr from Changan, Huawei and CATL is preparing the launch of its second model, which is planned to hit the local market later this year.

First pictures and information about the new electric car are now available from the registration application submitted to the Chinese authorities. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released its model catalogue for public comment last week, which was allowed to submit feedback between July 14 and July 20. Entry into the catalogue is the last major regulatory process by which a model can be allowed to be sold in China.

As the electric SUV apparently managed to pass the process, the Avatr 12 itself is confirmed as an approximately five-metre-long electric sedan, which is to be available either as a single-engine version with 230 kW of power or as a four-wheel-drive version with an additional 195 kW engine. It is built on the same EP1 platform as the Avatr 11 and is aimed to compete with other high-end Chinese electric vehicles such as Nio ET7 and Zeekr 001.

The drive system is to come from Huawei, the NMC batteries from CATL. According to CarNewsChina, the engines are the same as in the Avatr 11 SUV model and the battery options with 90.4 kWh and 116.8 kWh capacity are also likely to be the same.

Avatr was founded in 2021 by Nio and Changan, who were then joined by CATL towards the end of the year.
