MG4 gets optional larger battery

MG Motor has unveiled the new Extended Range variant for its MG4 electric model, making it the first with a range of more than 500 kilometres of WLTP range. The MG4 Extended Range is currently only available in the UK, but will likely be offered in other European countries at a later date.

Previous rumours were thus correct, as the extra range is provided by a larger battery with 77 kWh capacity, which enables a WLTP range of 323 miles (520 kilometres). According to MG Motor, it takes 39 minutes at the fast-charger to charge the battery from ten to 80 per cent. This corresponds to an average charging power of 83 kW. MG does not mention the peak charging power in the announcement.

The new variant also gets a more powerful motor with 184 kW output, which reduces the sprint time from 0 to 100 kph to 6.5 seconds. As usual with SAIC’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), this is a rear-mounted engine. Only the top-of-the-line MG4 XPower model launched in July has a second electric motor on the front axle for the 320 kW all-wheel drive. However, the MG4 XPower is only available with the 64 kWh battery for a range of 385 kilometres.

UK prices for the new MG4 Extended Range start at 36,495 pounds (currently around 42,450 euros). There are currently four drive variants: The Standard Range model uses a 51 kWh LFP battery and rear-wheel drive, and the Long Range has a 64 kWh NMC battery and rear-wheel drive were both available at the market launch. With the powerful all-wheel drive XPower and the new Extended Rande with a larger battery and rear-wheel drive, MG now added two more variants – at least in the UK.

As the market launch in Germany is not yet officially confirmed (but considered very likely), there are also no official prices yet. However, should MG Motor Germany follow the logic of their UK colleagues, the MG4 Extended Range could be priced the same as the MG4 XPower – in the UK, both variants are listed at the aforementioned £36,495. If the same is true in Germany, the 520-kilometre version of the MG4 would be available from 46,990 euros.
