XCharge brings battery HPC to Spain and Portugal

Chinese charging infrastructure manufacturer XCharge is partnering with utility Energias de Portugal (EDP) to drive the rollout of its Net Zero line of battery-based fast charging points in Europe.

The cooperation will kick off in Spain, where EDP is planning to build a nationwide network of charging stations at car dealerships, shopping centres, supermarkets, restaurants or hotels and has installed XCharge’s first Net Zero Series (NZS), according to a statement from XCharge’s European subsidiary. Further installations are planned in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

The Net Zero Series enables fast charging with up to 210 kW. Two EVs can plug in at the same time. Since the charging station has a buffer storage made of batteries from BYD, it requires a significantly lower connection to the local power grid – optional storage units with 233 or 466 kWh are also available. In addition, the NZS is equipped with a Battery2Grid function so that energy can be sold back to the grid at peak times when the battery is relatively full. That means that fast chargers can stabilise the grid and be installed in (rural) regions where the power grid is currently not designed for this load.

According to the statement, that aspect convinced EDP to go with the XCharge product. “One of the deciding factors for EDP in favour of the NZS was its ability to deliver a high-power output of 210kW while requiring only 60 kW input,” XCharge writes. That eliminates the need for additional technical equipment and lengthy management processes.

EDP Spain’s Director of Sustainable Mobility, Javier Martínez Ríos, emphasises that “these battery chargers will facilitate and simplify the deployment of the ultra-fast infrastructure, reduce installation time, and guarantee electric vehicle users ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles regardless of the power available on the grid.”

“NZS is not only an innovative product in the field of energy storage, but also has high safety qualities, supported by TUV Mark certification from the world’s leading testing service provider TUV Rheinland,” says Albina Ilyasov, Head of Sales and Business Development at XCharge Group. “We strongly believe that NZS will become an ideal solution for developing charging infrastructure. We are stepping up and working with more partners to bring our solution to other regions in Europe after this initial success.”
