Two Tesla Model 3 variants likely to drop out of US subsidy eligibility

The Tesla Model 3 with rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel drive Long Range variant of the Model 3 will apparently no longer qualify for federal subsidies in the USA from 2024. Initially, Tesla itself at least assumed that the subsidy would be reduced.

Following the publication of the guidelines on the requirements for the origin of battery components and materials, Tesla previously assumed that the tax credit for these two variants of the Model 3 would be halved from the previous USD 7,500 to USD 3,750 as of 1 January 2024 – this is how it was displayed on Tesla’s American website in the Model 3 configurator.

Tesla has now updated its website. “All new Model 3 vehicles currently qualify for a federal tax credit for eligible buyers. $7,500 tax credit will end for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Model 3 Long Range on Dec 31, 2023. Take delivery by Dec 31 for full tax credit,” it says. Interested customers are thus advised to take delivery of vehicles available at short notice this year – in which case there will also be six months of free charging at Tesla stations.

Tesla offers the base model of the Model 3 with rear-wheel drive at prices starting at 28,490 dollars – but this is still the practice of deducting the subsidy of 7,500 dollars and the expected savings on petrol costs over three years (amounting to 3,000 dollars). The list price is actually 38,990 dollars for the Model 3 with rear-wheel drive. The Model 3 Long Range is quoted at 35,490 dollars, but has a list price of 45,990 dollars.

Incidentally, the Model 3s in the USA are still the pre-facelift version – at least that’s how they are listed in the US configurator. The revised Model 3 Highland is currently only being built in the Chinese Giga Shanghai. However, the Model 3s sold in the USA still come from Fremont.
