Tesla could debut its compact electric car in 2025

Tesla wants to start production of its compact model for around 25,000 dollars in the middle of next year. According to an agency report, the model bears the internal codename 'Redwood' and is a compact crossover.

Reuters cites four people familiar with the matter as the source for this news, according to whom Tesla has informed its suppliers of the planned start of production in mid-2025. The description is in line with a statement made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in December, according to which the development of the 25,000-dollar model is already well advanced and that it would first be manufactured in the existing factory in Texas and later in the new Tesla plant in Mexico.

According to insiders, the model is codenamed ‘Redwood.’ Tesla is aiming for a production volume of 10,000 units – per week. The EV will be based on a new Tesla platform, which the US electric car manufacturer internally calls ‘NV9X’ and will be the base for at least two models. Musk mentioned in December that the production system for the compact car will be very innovative. “It’s a level of production technology that is far in advance of any automotive plant on Earth,” Musk said verbatim.

In addition to Texas and Nuevo León, the Tesla CEO explicitly mentioned Berlin as a future production location for the compact model in the December interview. According to observers, he had already done so at the beginning of November during another visit to the plant in Grünheide. Musk did not comment on Shanghai. However, there are already reports from China that Tesla wants to expand its plant there further for the production of the compact model.

The planned compact model will be sold for around 25,000 dollars. According to a Musk biography published last year, Tesla will launch a Robotaxi on the same platform a little later. The EVs will also share an assembly line.
