Madrid bans rental scooters from the city
According to Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the three operators did not meet “the requirements set by the mayor’s office to ensure the highest level of safety for citizens” in the Spanish capital. The providers were also unable to use the appropriate technology to control where the e-scooters could be driven or parked. The lack of accident insurance was also criticised.
Since spring 2023, only three companies have been allowed to offer e-scooters for hire in Madrid. Now, Lime, Dott, and Tier Mobility must remove all e-scooters from the city. However, the three providers are now given 20 days to file an appeal.
E-scooters have not been available for hire in Paris since September last year, when around 15,000 units were available. At the same time as the ban in Paris, the number of e-scooter hire companies in Rome was reduced from nine to three. In addition, the three remaining companies (Bird, Dott, and Lime) have only been authorised to offer 3,000 e-scooters each since then.
In Germany, the ban on rental scooters in Gelsenkirchen last attracted attention in April. Providers Bolt and Tier had to remove their e-scooters from the city by 20 April. The city previously required providers to register users with an ID card or their driving licence with the rental service before they could use the service – which they refused to do.
