Uzbekistan accelerates expansion of charging stations

The government of Uzbekistan has adopted new measures to expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The aim is to have a total of 32,400 charging stations installed in the country by the end of 2025.

From 1 February 2025, at least one parking space in public car parks must have a charging station for electric vehicles. Public parking spaces include not only those at government buildings, but also parking spaces at shopping centres, petrol stations, hotels and roadside parking spaces. Specifically, five per cent of all parking spaces or at least one parking space per location should have a charging facility. The report does not clearly state whether these should be AC or DC charging points.

Residential buildings will also be equipped with charging points. The report mentions explicitly charging stations with up to 22 kW, i.e. AC charging points. According to Kun.uz, the government’s initiative ” places a significant emphasis on integrating electric charging stations into existing infrastructure.” For example, installing charging points and their impact on the energy system will be considered when modernising and repairing the electricity grid. Charging infrastructure will also play an important role in urban planning.

The government is apparently also planning to take action against charging blockers with a regulation. The Ministry of the Interior has been tasked with preparing the necessary legislative changes within two months to enforce these regulations.

At around 449,000 square kilometres, the Central Asian country is as large as Sweden. According to a World Bank census from 2023, 36.4 million people live there. Even though Uzbekistan is not yet known as a large car nation, electrified vehicles are built there. BYD opened a plant in Jizzakh in July, where it manufactures two PHEV models.
