Lucid changes European boss and starts SUV production

There has been another change in the position of European CEO at Lucid Motors. Alexander Lutz has left the US electric car manufacturer after less than a year as Managing Director Europe. Instead, the Gravity electric SUV is now being built in series.

Firstly, the appointment of the European head: Alexander Lutz’s successor is Lawrence Hamilton, who previously headed up Genesis’ European business. Lutz was previously Head of Germany at Polestar and was responsible for the Swedish-Chinese brand’s Italian business before moving to Lucid. The portal Electric Vehicles initially reported on the change, but Lutz and Hamilton themselves confirmed the move on their LinkedIn profiles. The background is not yet known.

Alexander Lutz’s departure had not been on the cards: About a fortnight ago, he presented Lucid’s future strategy in Europe in an interview with the German publication Auto, Motor und Sport with the premiere of the Air Sapphire in the first quarter of 2025, the premiere of the Gravity electric SUV and then the market launch of a planned mid-range model in 2027.

Lutz himself has not yet commented on his departure, but the manager has already updated his LinkedIn profile. Although a Lucid Air can still be seen in the cover picture, Lutz now only describes himself as an ‘Automotive Executive’ and his position as Managing Director Europe is listed as ‘Dec. 2023-Dec. 2024’.

Nine manager departures in 14 months

His successor Lawrence Hamilton has also adjusted his profile in the career network and is listed there as ‘Dec. 2024-Today’ as Managing Director of Lucid Motors Europe, based in Amsterdam. He had previously held the same position at Genesis Motor Europe in Frankfurt since September 2022. Hamilton has been active in the automotive industry since the 1990s and has worked in various positions for Daewoo, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Kia and Hyundai – in various European countries and also Canada. It is not yet known who will succeed Hamilton at Genesis.

In its report, Electric Vehicles lists nine senior executives who have left Lucid in the past 14 months. These include several Vice Presidents (software development, supply chains, quality or communication/marketing), two Senior Vice Presidents (digital) and two members of the Board of Directors, Sherry House as Chief Financial Officer and Matthew Everitt as Chief Legal Officer.

However, there is also positive news from Lucid Motors: the manufacturer’s second model, the electric SUV Gravity, is now being built in series at the Casa Grande plant in Arizona. After the first pre-series vehicles of the new electric SUV were built in July, these are now the first customer vehicles.

Lucid has been accepting orders for the Gravity for several weeks, at least in the USA. The model is available there from 79,900 dollars. However, the version that has now rolled off the production line is not the base model, but the Gravity Grand Touring. This starts at 94,900 dollars. The Gravity Touring for less than 80,000 dollars is due to be launched at the end of 2025.

Albeit small volume, I just checked sales in Europe and their up multiples from before yet the manager that did it leaves. Makes me certain that this startup is bound to fail!
