Hyundai starts accepting orders for the Inster in Germany

Hyundai Germany is now accepting orders for all variants of the Inster small electric car. The basic version is available from 23,900 euros, with the large battery the Inster starts at 25,400 euros.

There will be four equipment lines of the Inster in Germany: Select, Trend, Cross and Prime. The Select and Trend variants are available with the 42 kWh battery, which is offered with a 71 kW electric drive – all four trim levels will be offered with the 49 kWh battery for up to 370 kilometres according to the WLTP. Deliveries of the Select, Trend and Priem variants are scheduled to start at the beginning of 2025, while it will take a little longer for the Cross: Production is not due to start until the end of the year.

Briefly about the Inster itself: The Inster is 3.83 metres long and, above all, only 1.61 metres wide. Nevertheless, it offers 280 to 351 litres of boot space. With the large battery, the WLTP range is up to 370 kilometres, while the variant with a 42 kWh battery has a range of up to 327 kilometres. The battery can be charged from ten to 80 per cent at a fast-charging station with up to 85 kW in around 30 minutes as standard, “which is significantly faster than many competitor models thanks to the good charging curve,” says Hyundai. For AC charging, a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger is available as standard in all variants.

However, there is one point to bear in mind when fast charging, especially in winter: The Inster does not have a battery heater ex-works, which can have a major impact on range and, above all, charging performance in cold weather. However, such a battery heating system is available as an option for the three lower trim levels (as is a heat pump) – only the top-of-the-range Prime model always has both features on board. It is therefore clear where Hyundai had to make savings in order to achieve a base price of less than 24,000 euros.

According to Hyundai, the standard equipment includes a “wide range of safety systems,” including Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Attention Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with stop function, Forward Collision Alert and a reversing camera. It will also feature the new intelligent traffic sign recognition system, which is now mandatory for new cars in the EU. However, Hyundai also states in the press release that the system “can be easily switched off by pressing and holding the mute button on the steering wheel.”

The first European prices for the Inster were announced a few days ago. In Norway, the small electric car can be ordered from the equivalent of 21,100 euros – however, electric cars are exempt from VAT there, which is why the prices are not directly comparable with Germany. In Norway, there are a total of five trim levels – only one with a small battery and four with a large battery.

In Germany, the basic Select trim level already includes a digital cockpit with a 10.3-inch display and a 10.3-inch touchscreen with navigation system. Other features include electrically folding, adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, automatic air conditioning, electric windows at the front and rear, a smart key system with a start/stop button and a leather steering wheel, which – in typical Hyundai fashion – allows the degree of recuperation to be adjusted via shift paddles. The base version of the Inster is already OTA-capable, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto can also be used instead of the Hyundai sat nav.

From the Trend mid-level upwards, there are heated and folding front seats, a sliding and folding rear bench, front and rear parking assistance with reversing camera, vehicle-to-load preparation (V2L) and a type 2 charging cable. There is also an inductive smartphone tray, 15-inch aluminium wheels and an optional additional assistance package.

The Cross trim, which is only available with the 49 kWh battery, plays a special role. This is the previously announced off-road look variant with modified front and rear bumpers, 17-inch rims and the exclusive ‘Amazonas Green Matte’ paint colour. In addition to the Trend equipment, there are also full LED headlights, illuminated LED pixels in the steering wheel (as in the large E-GMP models) and ambient lighting.

The top Prime equipment level (from €30,100, only with the large battery) includes not only the aforementioned assistance package (360° camera, rear parking aid with emergency braking function, blind spot warning system with monitor display as well as an exit warning system and cross-traffic assist), but also the efficiency package with battery heating and heat pump.
