Virta to manage EV infrastructure at Swedish airports

Swedish airport operator Swedavia and Finnish EV infrastructure service provider Virta have signed an agreement. To that end, Virta will manage EV charging infrastructure at several airports in the country.

The deal includes that all 800 existing charging points at Sweden’s airports will be connected to Virta’s charging platform – Virta Hub. According to Virta, “the connection will enable seamless management of EV charging, use of smart energy services, flexible billing and other features essential to running profitable charging stations.”

One of the changes will be that Swedavia will implement a charging payment system. Charging fees had previously been part of parking fees, but the new payment system will make charges more transparent for all EV drivers.

The infrastructure service provider also emphasises that, thanks to its “advanced energy management capabilities,” it will be easy to add more chargers in the future “without requiring major upgrades to the existing electrical connection, providing flexibility and future-proof capacity at all Swedavia’s airports.”

“There is a growing demand for scalable and efficient solutions for electric vehicles at airports,” says Martin Lundgren, Country Director, Scandinavia at Virta. “With our dynamic load management technology and other smart energy features, we can offer smooth experiences for EV drivers while ensuring the grid is stable at high-traffic locations.”

The Finnish company points out that it already has a similar deal in place with Finland’s Finavia airports and Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The current project described above is currently in the migration phase.
