USA: First NEVI stations in operation in Wisconsin

The first three NEVI-funded locations are now online in the US state of Wisconsin. There are a total of twelve charging stations, installed on the premises of a local petrol station brand.

Specifically, the stations are located on the properties of Wisconsin-based petrol station Kwik Trips in Ashland, Chippewa Falls, and Menominee – all rural communities “that see frequent travel due to tourism and their location along key highway corridors,” according to the press release from the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. All three locations feature four charging stations equipped with CCS and J3400 connectors.

In this case, the new stations are part of Kwik Trip’s Kwik Charge programme. It aims to provide DC charging to customers in the Midwest. As required by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula funding programme, each station offers up to 150 kW.

The NEVI programme funds up to 80% of eligible project costs for EV chargers along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. To be eligible, the stations must be “non-proprietary, allow for open-access payment methods, be publicly available or available to authorized commercial motor vehicle operators from more than one company.”

The chargers must be accessible to the public 24/7 and allow at least four EVs to charge simultaneously. Moreover, all available charging points must provide at least 150 kW, even if all are in use. There are additional uptime requirements, and all charging stations must offer CCS and NACS (now J3400) connectors.

“It’s great to see more states expanding the NEVI network and filling in coverage gaps for drivers and riders,” said Gabe Klein, executive director of the Joint Office. “EV charging often happens in communities. Whether it’s parents visiting their kids at college, families staying at their cabins, or people road tripping on Interstate 94 for the holidays – expanding the network gives consumers accessible options to charge their vehicles.”
