New York to fund zero-emisson transit buses
The funds can be used to purchase zero-emission vehicles, i.e. hydrogen-electric and battery-electric transit buses, or the necessary charging and fuelling infrastructure. The state will also subsidise the construction of new facilities or the update of existing facilities to house and maintain the zero-emission vehicles.
Transit providers can apply for up to 17.5 million dollars in funding and are required to pay at least 10 per cent of the cost out of their own pockets, meaning they are not allowed to use state funds for this purpose. Applications for the funding must be handed in by 4 April 2025.
The money is provided through the Zero-Emission Transit Transition Programme (ZETT) and is aimed at non-MTA authorities. MTA, or the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is New York’s official public transportation network. According to the press release, eligible transit systems include the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA), Central New York Regional Transportation Authority (CNYRTA/Centro), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) and Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA/RTS).
“Transportation is an important front in our battle against climate change, and we must explore every avenue to reduce greenhouse emissions from this vital sector,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul. “This funding will encourage transit agencies to incorporate more zero-emission vehicles into their fleets, which will lead to cleaner air in our neighbourhoods and help us stave off the impacts of climate change.”
“The Zero-Emission Transit Transition Program will further our efforts to reduce carbon emissions by helping local transit agencies stock their fleets with climate friendly vehicles,” said State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. “This is a great opportunity for communities across New York to invest in zero emissions transit and I encourage all eligible agencies and entities to apply.”
