Guinness World Record: Porsche Taycan achieves longest drift with an EV on ice

Porsche has set its fourth Guinness World Record with its Taycan electric model - this time, the premium electric car has broken the record for the longest continuous drift of an electric vehicle on ice. All to the backdrop of the beautiful icy landscape in northern Finland.

Under the supervision of Guinness World Records, the drive took place on an ice track at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland – around 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. There, instructor Jens Richter, at the wheel of a Taycan GTS, completed a total of 132 laps in controlled oversteer. He covered exactly 17.503 kilometres within 46 minutes. However, the organisers needed two attempts to set the record. “Under the extreme continuous load of the drifting Taycan, the ice track deteriorated faster than expected,” said Jens Richter about the first attempt.

For the second attempt, the team switched to shorter spikes and took advantage of the fact that the ice temperatures in Lapland dropped as it got darker. This time, they were successful: Richter kept the standard Taycan GTS in a controlled drift for 17.5 kilometres, or 132 laps, using only throttle and steering inputs. With this distance, the crew clearly surpassed the previous record of 14.809 kilometres.

“With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities,” says Jens Richter. “And this time even with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so well even under extreme conditions speaks volumes for its excellent chassis and balanced performance.”

This is the fourth time the Taycan secured a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. In 2023, Porsche overcame the highest altitude difference ever covered by an electric car with a Taycan Cross Turismo along the Xinjiang-Tibet route: 5,573 metres. Previously, racing driver Leh Keen had accelerated a Porsche Taycan to 165.1 kph in an exhibition hall in New Orleans in 2021, setting the world record for the fastest speed driven by a vehicle in an enclosed building. And in 2020, Dennis Retera drifted exactly 210 laps in a Taycan at the Hockenheimring, covering 42.171 kilometres in 55 minutes.
