Shanghai introduces incentives for the construction of battery swap stations

From 1 April 2025, Shanghai, a metropolis of millions, will subsidise the construction of battery exchange stations in the city. Hefei is also introducing a subsidy for such exchange stations. Electric car manufacturer Nio is the biggest beneficiary of the subsidy.

The portal CN EV News, among others, reports on the new subsidy in Shanghai, citing a recently published guideline that will be valid for five years. Specifically, from next month, Shanghai will grant a 40 per cent investment subsidy on exchange stations if they operate across all brands. If they are limited to just one vehicle brand, 20 per cent of the investment costs will still be subsidised. The energy provided in the stations is also subsidised. In addition, taxi drivers with compatible vehicles will receive a small monthly subsidy this year if they ‘mainly charge via battery exchange stations’, as it says.

A few days ago, the Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone in Anhui province also announced “exclusive purchase subsidies of up to RMB 10,000 for battery swap-enabled models.” That is the equivalent of around 1,260 euros. However, the brief announcement did not provide any further details about the subsidy, according to the portal, which indicates that the move was mainly to support Nio, which operates two factories in the Chinese province.

Interestingly, both cities have a connection to Nio, the previous main player in the market for battery swap vehicles and stations: Nio has its headquarters in Shanghai, while the company operates its two production facilities in Hefei. According to its own information, Nio currently has 3,154 battery swap stations in China, most of them in Shanghai (183). CATL is now also building exchange stations, but these are primarily aimed at the taxi sector.
