China releases Tesla from sales tax

The Chinese government has added Tesla’s electric cars to the list of vehicles exempt from sales tax. Only cars produced in China are exempt from the ten per cent sales tax.

JB Straubel leaves Tesla for consultancy

Elon Musk announced in the context of the latest quarterly figure announcement that Tesla co-founder JB Straubel will withdraw from the operational business as Chief Technology Officer and will in future only work in an advisory capacity for Tesla. The new Tesla CTO will be Drew Baglino.

Nio starts series production of second ES6 model

The Chinese electric car startup Nio has started series production of its second ES6 model. Both series, the ES6 and the ES8, are currently manufactured at the Nio-JAC plant in Hefei. After Nio’s plans for a factory in Shanghai were abandoned, plans are now being made for a factory in Beijing.

China: Tesla’s Model 3 factory ready for orders

Tesla has opened the order books in China for the Model 3, which the EV manufacturer will produce in its Shanghai plant, which is still under construction. The first deliveries of the Model 3 from local production are scheduled to start in six to ten months.

Nio gets hit by lawsuits

The Chinese EV manufacturer is facing a class action lawsuit from their investors in the U.S, who are unhappy that Nio gave up on their plan to build a factory in Shanghai, as well as making misleading claims about the impact of the updated Chinese subsidy situation and  the slower-than-expected deliveries of their electric SUV.

ZF expands hybrid business in China

The automotive supplier ZF is stepping up its involvement in China with the construction of further plants and the expansion of development capacities. This includes the start of production of the 8-speed automatic transmission 8HP at the ZF factory in Shanghai, including a variant for plug-in hybrid drives.

EV startup Evelozcity renamed Canoo

The Californian e-mobility startup Evelozcity that is led by former BMW managers (that had a stint over at Faraday) has got a new name: Canoo. They also streamlined their offer and have now announced four electric vehicles all designed for urban life and to be sold on a subscription basis only.

The Chinese electric car startup Nio has abandoned its plans to build its own plant in Shanghai. Nio will continue to use its existing plant in Hefei that it shares with JAC Motors for the production of its electric cars.

Leaked documents lay out Tesla Model Y production data

Tesla appears to operate on an aggressive timeline for producing the Model Y, internal documents leaked to Business Insider show. Tesla sent said documents to engineers ahead of the Q3 earnings call in October and so a Tesla spokesperson called these to be “outdated” by now. Still they reveal ambition.

SAIC-VW building factory for MEB BEVs

Volkswagen and their joint venture partner SAIC begun constructing a factory in China for electric vehicles based on VW’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB). The factory will take up operation in October 2020, and cost about $2.5 billion to build.

Tesla secures site for Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai

Tesla has found the spot to construct the Gigafactory 3 on Chinese soil. A 860,000 sqm plot of land in Shanghai has been secured according to a post the company made on Chinese social media and previous rumours had suggested as much. Still, the deal must be considered groundbreaking in every sense.

The preparations for Teslas Gigafactory in China are apparently progressing. As Bloomberg reports, Tesla is about to buy land for the factory for 145 million US dollars. A decision by the Shanghai city government to allocate the land to Tesla could already be made this month.
