MG reveals all-new MG4 EV for 2025

The MG4 EV is set for a complete facelift after just three years on the market. The new model is 11 cm longer than before with a 4.5 cm larger wheelbase, as well as a new electric drive.

The changes to the MG4 are quite substantial, with alterations to its size, styling, and hardware. It is not just a facelift of the old MG4 Electric; it is a completely new model. According to leaked specifications from Chinese authorities, it’s larger than the MG4 Electric in every way – clocking in at 4395 mm long, 1842 mm wide, and 1551 mm high. The MG4 EV also has a redesigned body, with sculpted fenders, traditional door handles, a roof spoiler and two tail lights connected by an LED strip. It also weighs significantly less than its predecessor, weighing 1485 kg instead of 1620 kg.

However, it has a slightly smaller motor than its predecessor, with a 120kW motor instead of the MG4 Electric’s 125kW motor. It still reportedly manages top speeds of up to 160kph. Battery capacity is yet to be disclosed, but expect a comparable range to the 218 miles of the current MG4.

Currently, the MG4 is available with three different powertrains. The Long Range comes with a 64kWh battery and 288 miles of range, while the Extended Range edition has a 77kWh battery for up to 329 miles of range. Finally, MG also offers an Xpower edition with dual motors that comes with greatly increased power but a reduced 245-mile range. While it’s unclear if the new MG4 will be available under three named options like this, it’s likely that MG will offer some level of customization.

The vehicle is expected to go on sale this summer. As the MG4 EV is labelled as a global model by SAIC, it can be assumed that the new version will soon replace the MG4 Electric outside of China as well. However, prices are not known for China or other markets. The MG4 Electric was available in Europe from €28,990.

The MG4 EV will be manufactured by the Chinese state-owned carmaker SAIC, which bought the formerly British brand MG in 2005. Since its launch in mid-2022, the current MG4 Electric has suffered from low sales in China compared to the MG5. In February, the MG4 only sold 13 units in China, with stiff competition from the likes of the BYD Dolphin and the Geely Geely Xingyuan. The firm had to instead rely on sales of its more popular ICE cars, the MG5 and the MG7, to support its efforts in China.

That’s why the company hopes the MG4 EV will perform better overseas in locations such as Europe, Thailand and India – where it is a more well-known brand.

I just hope it will be a lot more reliable than the current MG4EV..... and MG dealerships will become more customer focused!

Hope the range is equal or better, especially for the Australian market. That's one of the problems with the BYD Atto 3 - a sub 500km range. Makes a Sydney to Melbourne trip far too slow with too many stops. The MG4-77 can do it in 3 short (sub 20min) stops, equivalent to meal breaks on the 850km trip.
