MG to launch the MG4 Electric for €28,990

The SAIC brand MG Motor has opened the configurator for its MG4 Electric with its official market launch in Europe. The compact electric car is available in three model variants and is scheduled for delivery this year. By 2025, the Chinese company wants to offer ten model series.

The MG4 Electric Standard with a battery capacity of 51 kWh, a maximum range of 350 kilometres in the WLTP cycle and a 125 kW electric motor in the rear is the entry-level model. The MG4 Electric Comfort and MG4 Electric Luxury each have a 64 kWh battery and a 150 kW electric motor. The Comfort model can travel up to 450 kilometres.

List prices in France start at the €28,990 mentioned above, while the recommended retail price in Germany stands at €31,990. Pre-orders have been possible since the beginning of August. According to MG Motor, the first vehicles are to be delivered to customers from the pre-order programme before the end of 2022. This statement also seems very realistic, after all, more than 1,000 examples of the electric compact model arrived in the port of Zeebrugge (Belgium) at the beginning of September.

Unlike other electric vehicle models from MG, such as the MG5 Electric or the ZS EV, the MG4 is no longer based on an internal combustion engine platform. The basis for the new model is a pure E-platform called “Modular Scalable Platform” or MSP for short. This should bring great advantages in terms of packaging – as is usual for BEVs, the MG4 Electric has a long wheelbase, short overhangs and only a very short front bonnet. The battery cells are arranged horizontally in the pack, which means that the entire unit is only eleven centimetres high.

According to the press release, the MG4 is a globally developed model. The SAIC Motor Design Center in Shanghai, the Advanced Design Studio in London and the Royal College of Art, also based in the British capital, were involved. The technology of the 4.29-metre-long compact model, however, comes largely from China.

With the MSP allowing wheelbases of between 2.65 and 3.10 metres, MG Motor still has room to go down on the MG4’s 2.71 metres and, more importantly, up for more models – the brand has announced ten model lines by 2025. “The introduction of the latest MG4 Electric is our most important achievement yet. And there is more to come,” says Xinyu Liu, CEO of MG Motor Europe. “MG Motor aims to democratise smart mobility solutions to the many with affordable, yet well-equipped, great quality cars that offer a great driving experience. We have had a continuous commitment to make desirable vehicles accessible. By 2025, the brand’s portfolio will be enriched to ten models to satisfy customer needs across different segments, from A segment to sports cars.”
