Lucid likely to postpone expansion into Austria and Spain until 2027
To date, Lucid has had a relatively limited presence in Europe: the premium manufacturer of the battery-electric limousine Lucid Air and the electric SUV Lucid Gravity has so far only been active in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland. However, during the presentation of its 2025 financial results, the company announced in an investor presentation that it plans to expand into seven additional European countries this year: Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Austria, Sweden, and Spain. Until now, the only launch has taken place in Belgium, following the opening of a test-drive centre in Brussels last week.
However, the expansion into Austria and Spain will now be postponed until next year, according to the online magazine EV. The report cites unnamed insider sources. It also highlights that Lucid has faced repeated delays in its European market entries. For example, Lucid’s Europe chief, Lawrence Hamilton, recently admitted in an interview that while the UK is a key market for Lucid, a launch there is not expected until early 2028. Previously, the company had targeted a UK launch in 2026, later revised to 2027, and now 2028.
Lucid Motors is currently undergoing significant changes: to accelerate its growth in Europe and the Middle East, the company plans to shift from a direct sales model to a hybrid approach in these regions. While the direct sales structure – comprising flagship stores and its website – will be retained, independent dealerships will also be brought on board. For instance, the Wackenhut automotive trading group will serve as a dealer for Stuttgart and Baden-Baden. Meanwhile, Lucid continues to report substantial losses and was recently forced to temporarily halt deliveries of the Lucid Gravity due to supplier issues.
