Honda and Acura EVs can now use US Tesla Superchargers
This means that over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers will be available for drivers of these cars, as well as any other NACS DC fast-charging points.
Customers will be notified via the HondaLink and Acura EV apps when the adapters are available to purchase, and will also be able to use the apps to locate Superchargers.
Ryan Harty, assistant VP of Sustainability & Business Development at American Honda Motor, said: “Adding Tesla Supercharger network access to the charging networks already available to our EV customers means industry-leading fast-charging access for Honda and Acura EV drivers.
“By the end of this decade, we strive to provide Honda and Acura EV drivers with the most convenient and easy charging at more than 100,000 charge points nationwide, helping people choose to purchase an EV for the many benefits of driving one.”
The new charger is the only DC fast charging adapter approved by Honda, and the company warns customers against using any third-party adapters with Tesla Superchargers – stating that any damage caused may not be covered by their vehicle’s warranty.
Honda joins other brands such as Ford, Volvo, GM and Polestar in offering NACS adapters for their older vehicles. This broad switchover from other charging standards began in November 2022 when Tesla decided to publicly license NACS to other EV manufacturers in the US. Now, many of Tesla’s competitors are switching to NACS for their new vehicles and offering adapters for older models.
This shift on the part of automakers has primarily been motivated by the sheer scale and distribution of the Supercharger network in the US, which dwarves that of other charging providers. Using NACS adapters therefore gives drivers of other EVs access to a much larger charging network in the US.
