Tradelink operates 15 Volvo VNR Electric trucks from Californian ports

Californian haulage company Tradelink Transport has put 15 all-electric VNR Electric heavy-duty trucks from Volvo Trucks North America into operation at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. This means that almost a third of the company's fleet is now purely electric.

The new Volvo electric buses will operate within a 100-mile radius of the ports. This involves making runs to San Bernardino and Riverside areas in the mornings and covering shorter, more local distances in the afternoons. The trucks are charged overnight at the depot.

According to Volvo North America, Tradelink’s choice of Volvo VNR Electric trucks was partially motivated by the logistic company aiming to retain their driver-employee workforce. The electric trucks reduce noise, heat and vibration during truck operations and create a cleaner and more comfortable work environment.

“Once drivers experience battery-electric trucks, they often don’t want to switch back to conventional vehicles,” said Rigoberto Cea, president, Tradelink Transport. “The Volvo VNR Electric truck provides a smooth, quiet ride, and we’ve seen strong enthusiasm from our team as they adapt to this new technology.”

Tradelink Transport is a haulage company based in Compton in the US state of California and earns its money by transporting goods from the Californian ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the depots and marshalling yards in the hinterland.

In total, Tradelink operates a fleet of 48 trucks – including 21 CNG, 15 electric and twelve diesel vehicles. The Californian haulage company ordered the 15 all-electric heavy-duty trucks in October 2022. Ten of the 15 Volvo VNR Electric trucks were purchased with financial support from California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). The company also benefited from other funding programmes during the procurement process. Tradelink relies on ABB chargers with 180 and 350 kW to supply the electric lorries with power.
