Tesla stops accepting orders for the Model S and Model X in China

The Tesla Model S and Model X can currently no longer be ordered in China. The reasons are unknown. One reason may be the escalating trade war between Washington and Beijing.

It was no longer possible to order the S and X models on the Chinese website, as Reuters reported on Friday. No orders could be placed on the WeChat channel either.

Both the Model S sedan and Model X SUV are manufactured at Tesla’s Fremont facility in California and imported into China. While Tesla has not officially commented on the rationale behind this move, it coincides with China’s recent escalation of tariffs on US imports to 125%, following the US raising duties on Chinese goods to 145%.

These heightened tariffs substantially elevate the retail prices of imported vehicles, rendering them less competitive against domestically produced electric vehicles. Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, which produces the Model 3 and Model Y, caters to both domestic and international markets, constituting the majority of Tesla’s sales in China.

According to Reuters, citing the China Auto Dealers Association, China imported 1,553 Model X and 311 Model S vehicles last year, representing less than 0.5% of Tesla’s total deliveries of over 657,000 vehicles that year.
