Audi to release two A6 plug-in hybrid models

The Audi A6 - not the battery-electric A6 e-tron - is now available again in two plug-in hybrid versions. Compared to its predecessors, the battery is significantly larger, increasing the electric range on paper to up to 106 kilometres.

The plug-in hybrid with the new Audi sales designation ‘e-hybrid’ is available in two power levels with 220 and 270 kW system output. A two-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 185 kW takes care of the combustion part. The electric motor contributes up to 105 kW to achieve the 270 kW system output. This version can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in 5.3 seconds with 500 Nm of torque, while the 220 kW version needs 6.0 seconds with 450 Nm – the saloon and estate both accelerate at the same speed.

The new generation of high-voltage battery in the plug-in hybrids has around 45 per cent more capacity than its predecessor. This means that 25.9 kWh (20.7 kWh net) are available for electric driving, which should result in the aforementioned 106 kilometres according to the WLTP. The battery installed under the boot floor can be charged with up to 11 kW AC in 2.5 hours; there is no DC charging option.

According to Audi, the recuperation performance has been increased and can be adjusted in three stages in EV mode using the shift paddles on the steering wheel – alternatively, there is also automatic recuperation. The A6 e-hybrid is designed to drive as long as possible in electric mode “to fully utilize the available battery charge to the driver’s destination,” explained the Ingolstadt-based company. The hybrid management system was designed for “efficiency, flexibility, and maximum customer comfort.”

The A6 Sedan e-hybrid quattro variant with 220 kW system output costs from €65,800 in Germany, while the A6 Avant e-hybrid quattro starts at €68,300. Prices for the higher performance level with 270 kW start at 75,050 euros for the saloon and 77,550 euros for the Avant.

Originally, the A6 presented in the spring was to be launched as the A7 in order to distinguish the electric model series with even numbers (such as the PPE electric A6 e-tron) from the combustion/hybrid models with odd numbers. However, shortly before the premiere of the new model, the Audi Board of Management overturned the naming system introduced in 2023 and reintroduced the traditional model designations. The A6 and A6 e-tron therefore have almost the same name again, although they are different models on different platforms.
