Fortum launches Battery Box for EV battery recycling logistics
The Battery Box is a certified safety container that can be ordered via Fortum’s online platform. Customers can book delivery and collection, track status updates, and access all required documentation for regulatory compliance. Designed for ease of use, the system enables companies to manage their battery waste efficiently and safely.
“From order to disposal, we offer a safe and transparent service as a specialist in battery recycling and the treatment of hazardous waste,” said Tero Holländer, Head of Business Line Batteries at Fortum Battery Recycling. “Each kilogram of recycled battery materials takes us closer to a sustainable and autonomous European energy system.”
Companies can order one or multiple containers to be delivered directly to site. In Germany, one box costs around 1,500 euros, while prices drop if more than one container is ordered for simultaneous pickup. Once filled, Fortum arranges collection and issues a recycling certificate.
According to the company, the new offer responds to growing regulatory pressure under the EU’s Battery Regulation (BATT2), which mandates ambitious targets for battery recycling rates and the use of recovered materials in new cells.
The company operates a pan-European infrastructure for EV battery recycling, including a facility in Kirchardt, Germany, opened in 2023. This site processes over 3,000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries annually and connects to Fortum’s hydrometallurgical recycling plants in Finland. It is also planning a second recycling facility in Germany, though the project is facing headwinds from locals.
Fortum’s low-emission process is based on proprietary research and focuses on recovering critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel.
