Italian municipality of Bari launches €34m electric bus tender
The tender is being financed by the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and has a deadline of 30 June 2026 for both the supply and operation of the buses. The authorities are looking for suppliers with a minimum turnover of €44.7m euros (exc. VAT) in the best three years out of five. Moreover, operators must have a record of delivering no less than 80 fully electric Class I M3 buses in the last 10 years.
The tender itself is structured as a single lot and is seeking 42 low-floor articulated electric buses designed for urban use of up to 20 hours per day. The buses must carry at least 110 passengers – 35 seated – and have four doors, two wheelchair areas, and a boarding ramp.
In terms of technical specifications, the authorities are seeking vehicles with a minimum battery capacity of 430 kWh and a minimum range of 145km between charges. They must manage average commercial speeds of 18.5km/h and be capable of handling gradients of up to 5 per cent. Additionally, they must support both overnight and one-off charging with a minimum of two 100kW plug-in connectors.
This follows an announcement in October 2023 that Bari aimed to procure 135 electric buses by 2026. In May of this year, the Bari bus carrier AMTAB added the first of these electric buses to its fleet, namely 23 Iveco E-Ways. However, these will not be used for the new BRT system.
