Kempower to build new electric bus depot in western Australia
The depot will be one of the largest electric bus depots in the state and will be fitted out with Kempower’s DC fast charging technology. Initially, overnight charging infrastructure will be created for 132 buses, however the depot has been designed in such a way as to support future scaling up to 180 vehicles.
There’s no details yet on exactly what kind of charging technology will be in place at the depot. However, Kempower typically deploys its modular charging satellites in bus depots in other regions. These are operated via either overhead charging or charging pillars next to the vehicles. The first bus depot to feature Kempower charging solutions opened last year in Bologna, Italy, and offers DC fast charging with a 400kW power module. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the same solutions will feature at the Perth depot.
The new depot is being built in partnership with Kempower’s Australian partner Charge Hub, which is managing the imports, technical compliance and commissioning of the charging infrastructure. The local installation partner is the firm Addelec, while Swan Group is handling on-site delivery, construction and project execution.
Carlo Cecchi, Kempower’s Director of New Markets, said: “The Bayswater project marks another important milestone in our mission to support Australia’s decarbonization journey. We’re honored to have been selected by the PTA for another iconic project, which reaffirms our strategy of investing in people, products, and solutions to support large infrastructure across its entire lifecycle.”
Paul Guy, MD of Charge Hub, added: “The Public Transport Authority of Western Australia are demonstrating clear leadership and dedication through their planning and commitment to deliver on their statewide electrification strategy. Charge Hub fully supports their approach by establishing our new local office and working closely with Addelec and Swan Group to successfully deliver the Baywater depot.”
