Amazon orders 5,000 electric delivery vans from Mercedes
According to Mercedes-Benz Vans, delivery of the almost 5,000 units will begin in the coming months. Around three-quarters of the vehicle order is composed of eSprinter transporters, and around a quarter of the delivered vehicles will be eVito panel vans. Germany stands out as the target market: more than half of the order (a good 2,500 units) is to be delivered to Germany. Mercedes does not specify which other four European countries are involved.
Instead, the manufacturer emphasises that this is the largest joint deal in the field of electric vehicles for both parties to date. In 2020, Amazon had already put 1,800 eVito and eSprinter vehicles into operation. Amazon also placed an order for more than 200 new eActros 600 electric trucks with Mercedes-Benz Trucks at the beginning of this year.
The eVito fleet now ordered for Amazon’s delivery partners will be built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria, Spain, while the eSprinters will be built in Düsseldorf. The eVito panel van is primarily designed for urban environments and is available in two engine versions (150 or 85 kW) and two battery options (90 or 60 kWh). However, it remains to be seen which configuration Amazon will opt for. For its part, the eSprinter is available in two lengths and with three battery options. It has a load volume of up to 14 cubic metres and a gross vehicle weight of up to 4.25 tonnes. For the Amazon models, the eSprinter vans have “custom-made shelves for parcel organisation and a partition wall with a sliding door to the driver’s cabin.” The MBUX multimedia system from Mercedes is also integrated in both model series.
“I am delighted that we are further intensifying our long-standing relationship with Amazon and are working together towards the fully electric future of transportation,” said Sagree Sardien, Head of Sales & Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans. “The courier, express, and parcel service industry once again proves to be a key driver of electromobility. Our eVito and eSprinter are perfectly tailored to meet the demands of our commercial customers regarding efficiency and range.”
“This deployment of 5,000 electric delivery vans further underscores our work to reduce carbon emissions in our operations. From electric bikes to vans to trucks and infrastructure, we are well on our way to transforming our transportation network. We look forward to continuing to work with Mercedes‑Benz to enable even faster electrification and decarbonisation across Europe,” added Neil Emery, Director of Global Fleet & Product at Amazon. He expects that the new vehicles will be able to deliver more than 200 million parcels per year.
