The MOU will see U Power provide the technology to incorporate battery-swapping into Beijing Foton vehicles, as well as the development and testing of battery-swapping stations and growing its battery-bank ecosystem. Beijing Foton will also gather performance data on battery health, charging and capacity. The agreement will cover markets in SEA, South America, Hong Kong, and Macau, with both companies saying that the agreement could expand in future to other projects.

U Power’s main battery swapping product, UOTTA, can be used for both personal and commercial EVs and promises ‘3-minute battery swapping’. The company’s swapping station uses rotating lifting equipment in a box structure to quickly swap out batteries ‘to reduce range anxiety’. The company also has a ‘multi mode lift-type’ chassis-based battery swapping station that can be adapted to a range of different size vehicles including buses, pickup trucks, light trucks and minibuses provided they use the same specification of battery swapping modules. Beijing Foton, meanwhile, is China’s biggest producer of commercial vehicles with numerous investments in electromobility. It already has a number of electric trucks with battery swapping capabilities, including the Auman e-truck series.

Johnny Lee, CEO and Chairman of U Power, said: “This partnership marks another significant step forward in our strategy of expanding OEM partner base. Through joint promotional and sales efforts, U Power expects to accelerate the establishment of a comprehensive battery-swapping and battery-bank ecosystem in several of its existing key markets. We look forward to a strong collaboration with Beijing Foton to strategically expand our global footprint and increase our market share.”
