Mercedes-Benz grows PHEV sales as EV deliveries decline in Q2
At the Mercedes-Benz Group level, the company sold 547,100 cars and vans in the second quarter of 2025, down 9% year-on-year. BEV sales in the second quarter of 2025 totalled 41,900 vehicles – i.e. the passenger car division and the van business combined. In Q2/2024, the manufacturer still sold 51,000 electric cars and vans. The number of BEVs sold is also down compared to Q1/2025, when the manufacturers sold 45,500 battery-electric vehicles.
Plug-in hybrid sales, however, saw notable growth this past quarter. Mercedes-Benz Cars’ global plug-in hybrid deliveries rose by 34% in Q2, while in Europe, the share of electrified vehicles (xEVs, including BEVs and PHEVs) reached 40%, with xEVs representing 21% of global car sales in the quarter.
The incoming orders for the newly launched CLA are gaining momentum, says Mercedes-Benz, positioning it as a crucial step towards its upcoming EV product offensive. That includes the reveal of the all-electric GLC in September 2025 to strengthen its mid-size electric SUV portfolio.
“Overall, we see good customer demand in the US and Germany for our products including our Top-End vehicles, despite tariffs impacting our global sales in the second quarter,” said Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Marketing & Sales. “The all-new CLA received very positive feedback. This product marks the beginning of further electric vehicle sales growth ahead of the biggest series of car launches at Mercedes-Benz.”
Electric van deliveries up 32% year-on-year
Mercedes-Benz Vans delivered 93,400 units in Q2, representing a 10% year-on-year decline but a 13% increase versus Q1 2025. BEV sales for the van segment grew significantly, up 32% year-on-year and 44% quarter-on-quarter, accounting for 7% of global van sales and 10% in Europe.
“The Mercedes-Benz Vans result for Q2 2025 shows a positive development of 13% relative to Q1 2025,” said Sagree Sardien, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales & Marketing. “The growth on the quarter is driven by an increased momentum in both private and commercial vans. We are encouraged to see the intensification of our efforts to deliver a premium customer experience and electrification of the portfolio, translated into a 7% growth for private vans and 42% for eVans in the first half of the year.”
Mercedes also highlighted a major order of 5,000 electric vans for Amazon as a customer milestone, with deliveries to the online retailer’s transportation network planned over the coming months.
Regional trends and outlook
In Europe, Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 159,700 units (+1%), including 52,800 in Germany (+7%). Asia sales declined 16% to 189,200 units, with China down 19% to 140,400. North America saw an overall 14% drop to 80,600 units, though US retail deliveries rose 26% year-on-year. The manufacturer does not give specific figures for BEVs or PHEVs for the individual regions.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz emphasises its upcoming “biggest series of car launches,” including new BEV models such as the electric GLC. Despite short-term BEV delivery declines, the company aims to strengthen its electric mobility portfolio and maintain its leadership in luxury segments globally.
